It seemed like every month this year, a friend would share that a close family member had died. Many of these people were elderly, so I wanted to share a book that was published this year that shows a child processing the loss of an elderly neighbor. The book gives us glimpses of multi-generational grief from the widow to the mother of the young girl to the girl herself.

I love how the author uses the imagery of God collecting our tears in a bottle. Just like God knows the number of hairs on our heads (Matthew 10:30), and God’s thoughts about us are as numerous as the grains of sands on the seashore (Psalm 139:17-18), I am amazed that God knows every teardrop that we shed. God’s care for us is infinite! His love is truly everlasting. The illustrations poignantly depict deep emotions and authentically reflect diverse people in our neighborhoods. Discussion questions are provided to help guide further conversations with your child.

You may want to consider giving a “bottle of tears” to remind someone grieving of God’s faithfulness even in sorrow.
